Guide

Split a PDF by page or extract a range

Break one PDF into single-page files, or pull a named set of pages into a smaller document.

How to split or extract PDF pages

Splitting is the opposite of a merge. Use it when a scanner produced one huge file, when a form portal wants a single page, or when you need to send only an appendix.

Every-page mode writes each page to its own PDF named from the original, then zips them. Extract mode keeps your chosen pages in one file, in the order you listed. Page numbers are 1-based, so 1 is the first page.

Work happens in the browser. A 200-page scan will produce 200 small PDFs in zip mode, which can be slow on a phone. Extracting 1-3 pages from that same scan is usually quick.

  1. Open Split PDF and add the PDF you want to divide.
  2. Choose “every page” to get one file per page, or “extract” and type a list such as 1,3,5-7.
  3. Run Split PDF. Every-page mode downloads a zip; extract mode downloads one PDF with only those pages.
  4. Open the result and confirm the page count before you delete the original.

Split modes

Extract is better when the recipient should receive one attachment. Every-page mode is better when each sheet has to go into a different folder or upload slot.

If you need to drop pages and keep the rest as one file, Remove Pages is a better fit than split-then-merge.

  • One file per page, packed as a zip download.
  • Extract a custom list or ranges (for example 2-4,8).
  • Keeps original page drawing commands rather than rasterizing.
  • Refuses an empty page list in extract mode.
  • Leaves the original file on your device unchanged.

Privacy when you split a PDF

Only your browser reads the source PDF. We do not store the extracted pages. The zip or extract you download stays on your device.

Splitting does not remove sensitive pages from the original on disk. Delete or store the original yourself. How we handle files is described in the Privacy Policy.

Frequently asked questions

No. Pages are copied. Image compression already in the file stays as it was.
